The Wildlife Trade

The commercial trade in wild animals is a multi-billion dollar business that threatens the survival of many species and results in the inhumane treatment of billions of animals every year. A great deal of this trade is illegal. Estimated at $6-20 billion a year by Interpol, the illegal wildlife trade has drastically reduced numerous wildlife populations and currently has some teetering on the brink of extinction.

Each year billions of animals of all types are captured from the wild and traded, either alive or dead. Commercial uses of wildlife can be divided into the trade in wildlife parts and products and the trade in live wildlife. The trade in animals for their parts to be used in traditional medicine is a particular problem in Asia.

The trade in wildlife is inherently inhumane. Methods used to capture and kill wild animals whose parts are destined for the trade, particularly when this is done on a large scale, as are many commercial operations, are grossly inhumane. Animals are often poisoned, trapped or snared, or bludgeoned to death. Their parts are often removed even before they are dead.

The trade in live wildlife results in the injury and deaths of a large percentage of those animals captured for the trade. The illegal wildlife trade is a huge problem in Asia and many species are being pushed to the brink of extinction by the trade.

It is up to each and every one of us to help end this trade by becoming informed consumers. We must make sure that we do not buy products made from wild animals. Join us in the InfoBus today to end this cruel and ruthless trade.
