Product testing on animals
Every year, cosmetics companies abuse and kill millions of animals to test their products. In addition, millions more animals undergo tremendous suffering in cruel tests for new ingredients for household products, when there are thousands of products already on the market. These companies claim they test on animals to establish the safety of their products and ingredients for consumers. However, alternative testing methods are widely available and lead to more reliable results.
There is an internationally recognised scheme that enables consumers to easily identify and purchase products which have not been tested on animals. This scheme is known as:
The Humane Cosmetics Standard (HCS)
A company approved by the HCS, or Leaping Bunny scheme, no longer conducts or commissions animal testing for its cosmetics and toiletries products.
The Humane Household Products Standard (HHPS)
A company approved by the HHPS, or Leaping Bunny scheme, no longer conducts or commissions animal testing for its household products. Household products include a whole range of items including bleach, washing-up liquid, laundry detergent, furniture polish and air freshener.
A “leaping bunny” is the logo for the Humane Cosmetics Standard and the Humane Household Products Standard. Look for this logo on products to ensure that they are cruelty-free! You can find a list of HCS/HHPS approved products at www.gocrueltyfree.org
Another scheme which guarantees that products have not been tested on animals is the Australian-based “Choose Cruelty Free” scheme. For a list of approved “Choose Cruelty Free” products go to www.choosecrueltyfree.org.au
For a list of cruelty-free products- that have not been tested on animals- that are available in Singapore, check out the ACRES Cruelty-Free Shopping Guide at http://www.acres.org.sg/issues_testexperiment.html
