The tech FAQ is for technical queries and computer problems.

Why do I get the alert 'Out of memory'?

If you're a serious multi-tasker, try closing all applications (such as browser, word processor, spreadsheet, MP3 player). Now open just the browser and try Habbo Hotel again.

Buggy software on your computer could be slowly eating up all the memory. After a long time, the computer will run out of memory. Re-starting may solve it.

Why do I keep getting the 'Disconnected' notice?

When you see the 'disconnected' message, it means your browser has lost contact with the Habbo game server.

Some common causes are:
* Interference on your wireless LAN (WLAN) causing brief drops in your connection to the Internet
* Peak traffic on your cable service causing long delays
* Static on phone lines causing poor ADSL connection

These problems may not be noticeable in normal web browsing, because the browser doesn't need the network after the page has been fully drawn.

You can reload Habbo by pressing the F5 key. Try a wired connection, if you suspect wireless problems. You can listen for static on a ADSL line simply by picking up the phone connected to it. As a last resort, you might consider switching ISPs.

Can I get a computer virus from Habbo?

No. There are industry standard security measures in place to prevent un-authorized access to the game servers.

Why is my speech taking a while to appear on the screen?

If there is a noticeable delay between you typing and the speech bubble appearing, it's probably due to the hotel being rather busy or high Internet traffic at that time.

Why can't I get into a room?

It may be full. Check the Hotel Navigator to see how many people are in it first. Public rooms can hold around 90 people, small guest rooms about 25 and large guest rooms about 50.

People move about a lot in the hotel though, so try again in a minute or two.

Why are some of the things in my hand/room grey/white boxes with PH written on them?

PH = placeholder. These boxes show when it cannot display what you have in our database. This could be for all kinds of technical reasons, such as your machine being low on memory, or the Internet being too busy.

To fix this - just reload and all your furni should show in its full glory. The boxes show that all your things are safe.

Will Habbo run on a computer upgraded to Windows XP Service Pack 2?

Yes. However, the pop-up blocker introduced in the new Internet Explorer must be left to its default setting (Medium) or turned off. If you set the pop-up blocker to protect at High setting, you must separately allow pop-ups for Habbo Hotel.

Habbo Hotel does not fit on my computer's display. What can I do?

Your desktop is probably set to show 800x600 pixels. A better size for Habbo is 1024x768 pixels. You may set this from the Windows Control Panel, Display settings.

If there is no option to increase the resolution to at least 1024x768, then try auto-hiding the Windows taskbar to give more space to the Habbo window.

Where can I get more technical help?

If none of these questions solve your problem, please write in to Contact Us.

Provide as much detail about your problem as you can, so that our Player Support can assist you more quickly. Also, make sure you try all the suggestions here first! Most Habbos' technical problems are solved by one or more of the FAQs here.

Why is Habbo freezing intermittently on Mozilla Firefox?

If you have a more modern Windows computer with dual processors and you run Firefox, you may experience your Habbo client window freezing intermittently. We have come up with a solution for it! Unfortunately, you need to do it each time you start Firefox, but hey, it does solve the problem. :) So do the following?

When you have Firefox open and running:

1. Open Windows Task Manager (hold down Ctrl + Alt and tap delete once).
2. Select the Processes tab.
3. Sort by Image Name by clicking Image Name (this step is optional).
4. Right click firefox.exe and choose 'Set Affinity'.
5. Deselect 'CPU 1' and click OK.

Important note: You will need to repeat the above steps each time you open/close Firefox.

Why do I get a message saying such-and-such file is not a Director file?

It may be caused by missing or incorrectly-linked files in your browser's cache. Clearing the cache and reloading will solve the issue.

See the section on clearing your browser's cache in this section.

Why can't I see anyone? Why do I see a black screen?

The main cause for invisible Habbos, invisible clothing, missing Catalogues, or Habbo Messengers is in fact missing game files. Clearing the cache and reloading will solve the issue.

See the section on clearing your browser's cache in this section.

Why does it say 'old client please reload'?

We are constantly working to make Habbo Hotel run faster for you and to add cool new stuff. This means that we have to change the whole client (the graphics you download to your computer to show you the hotel). Try pressing CTRL + R to reload (Apple + R on a Mac) and if it still doesn't help, try clearing your cache.

See the section on clearing your browser's cache in this section.

Why can't I see my Habbo's profile?

If you can't see your Habbo's profile, or the Habbo Club web purchase component, it means that you either need to install a Flash player or update your current version.

Step 1: Un-install the old Flash Player.

Step 2: Re-install/install the latest version of the Flash Player.

Note: Make sure that you disable your firewall when downloading Flash Player, otherwise some important files might be missing during the download.

How do I clear my cache?

Browsers store frequently-used files in a cache so it speeds up browsing to frequently-visited sites.

Many browser-related issues can be solved by clearing this cache.

Firefox
1) Log out of Habbo Hotel Singapore (close the window). Close all Firefox windows/tab except for one.
2) Click the 'Tools' menu; select Options'.
3) A dialog box will appear. Select 'Privacy'.
4) Select 'Settings' in the 'Private Data' box. Check 'Clear Now'. Make sure 'Cache' is checked, then click the 'Clear Private Date Now' button.
5) Firefox will now clear your cache. Click 'OK' to close the Options dialog box.
6) Close Firefox.
7) Re-start Firefox and log back into Habbo Hotel.

Internet Explorer (IE7)
1) Log out of Habbo Hotel Singapore (close the window). Close all Internet Explorer windows except for one.
2) Click the 'Tools' menu; select 'Internet Options'. Choose the General tab.
3) A dialog box will appear. Find the Temporary Internet Files section. Click on Delete.
4) A Delete Browsing History window will appear. Click on the Delete Files... button.
5) Internet Explorer will now clear your cache.
6) Close Internet Explorer.
7) Restart Internet Explorer and log back into Habbo Hotel.

Note: Some buggy browsers may damage Flash in the process. Reloading Flash should solve that issue.

Why do I have problems with Flash and Internet Explorer?

Internet Explorer 6 and older versions of Flash have an odd bug, where Flash works on some web pages and not on others. In some cases, completely clearing the Internet Explorer 6 browser cache can cause Flash to stop working on some websites.

Symptom
You visit a website which tells you that you either have Javascript turned off or you need to get the latest version of Flash. When you visit Adobe's site to install Flash, you see the rotating Flash banner telling you Flash is successfully installed, yet it still doesn't work.

Explanation
When you select the 'Delete all offline content' option when clearing your temporary Internet files, IE is supposed to remove only temporary program files. However, there are some cases where IE will remove the Flash configuration as well. When websites try to detect Flash on your computer, they will see that you do not have it installed.

Unfortunately, IE actually leaves the program installed on the computer. When you visit the Flash download website, the website is able to detect the program and skips straight to the successfully-installed page.

You can easily see if this is the case because the ActiveX configuration will be missing from the downloaded program files directory. For example, inside:

C:\windows\downloaded program files

you should see the Shockwave Flash Object (not to be confused with Shockwave ActiveX Control). If it is missing, IE will have issues displaying Flash items from some websites.

Solution
You can fix this by removing Flash properly, then re-installing it.

Download the un-installer.

You will need to close all browser windows before continuing.

Once completed, install Flash directly from the manufacturer's website.

Note: Make sure that you disable your firewall when downloading Flash Player, otherwise some important files might be missing during the download.

What is a keylogger?

A keylogger is a piece of malicious software that records everything you type and sends it over the Internet to the hacker. The hacker is able to view your login names and passwords to Habbo, credit cards, Internet banking, email, etc.

How do I know if I have a keylogger?

This sort of makware usually comes hidden in email attachments and web downloads. Clicking on the files or even just visiting certain dodgy websites can result in your computer being infected.

Also, most keyloggers are disguised as free programs, for example free credits or furni programs offered on a scam site.

If you have a firewall installed, it may give you some indication, because most will ask when a suspicious program is trying to communicate on the Internet.

How do I get rid of a keylogger?

You need updated anti-virus software to get rid of and block this sort of threat.

See the FAQ in this section for anti-virus software.

How do I secure Windows?

Windows, just like any other piece of software, has updates and security patches which you should keep up-to-date with in order to improve the security of your system. In addition it has a number of services which, if not in use, are better off disabled so that you don't run the risk of being exploited through them.

Windows Messenger
Don't be confused: this isn't MSN. Windows Messenger is a service usually used if computers are networked, but can also be exploited by those on the Internet. You can safely disable Windows Messenger by following the instructions on Microsoft's website:
Disabling Windows Messenger on XP
Disabling Windows Messenger on 2000

Windows Update
If you don't have Windows set to update itself automatically, it's essential that you check Microsoft's site regularly for updates:
Microsoft Update

Is my personal firewall blocking access to Habbo Hotel?

If you have firewall software installed and are experiencing difficulties, please read the Help for your software to find out how to give permissions for your web browser to access Habbo. It is unlikely the Windows XP firewall will block Habbo traffic.

Your network must be configured to allow Habbo access to the following Ports:

TCP ports in the range: 39000, 39001, 39002, 39003, 39004

At the following addresses:
Server name: proxy-1.habbohotel.sg
IP: 203.208.244.137

Server name: proxy-2.habbohotel.sg
IP: 203.208.244.140

What is a firewall?

A firewall is a program which acts as a barrier between your computer and the Internet. All firewalls block outsiders from connecting to your computer. A good firewall also limits which programs inside your computer can access the Internet, e.g. your web browser.

Some nasty people out there will try to get your IP address and then scan your computer for ways into your system. A firewall will block such attempts to get access and is therefore a 'must have' program for anyone who uses the Internet. Some free firewall programs include:

ZoneAlarm Personal Firewall
Comodo Personal Firewall

Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall offers a 30-day trial with full functionality. After that period, some components will be disabled unless you purchase a licence. The major components will continue working however.
Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall

Why can't I see where to talk?

If you are not using AOL (see FAQ on AOL if you are), then try pressing Ctrl-R (Apple-R on a Mac), which should reload the hotel in a browser window with scroll bars. To avoid this problem set your browser so that the windows are not cascading - i.e. not getting further down the screen each time you open a new one.

What is anti-virus software?

To the normal home computer user, a virus is a piece of hacker software, designed to damage software on your computer. It may also be used to steal your passwords, make your computer send junk mail to people, or even attack another person's computer.

Anti-virus software is supposed to find and remove viruses from your computer. Everyone should get it.

Anti-virus software is very affordable at student rates. If you want to try something free, there are several options. Here are some links to companies providing online scan services:

Trend Micro
Bit Defender
Panda Security
Kapersky Lab
McAfee

Most reputable anti-virus software will update itself automatically over the Internet. It's important that you ensure this is happening so the software can detect new viruses.

It's a good idea to scan your Windows-based computer in Safe Mode as some nasty files bury themselves in your system when it's running normally. Even if removed, they can reappear next time you start up your PC. You can get into Safe Mode by re-booting your computer and pressing F5 until you see a menu. If you're intending to use online scans then you may need to select the 'Safe Mode with Networking' option from the menu which will enable you to access the Internet.

Why can't I see the whole screen when I use AOL?

The default browser supplied with an AOL connection does not display Habbo Hotel correctly.

You can still use AOL to connect - simply choose a different browser, such as Internet Explorer or Firefox.

What are the ports and addresses used by Habbo?

The Habbo virtual world uses these Internet addresses:
Server name: proxy-1.habbohotel.sg
IP: 203.208.244.137

Server name: proxy-2.habbohotel.sg
IP: 203.208.244.140

Your firewall needs to allow Habbo to use the TCP port numbers:
39000, 39001, 39002, 39003, 39004

What is anti-spyware software?

Anti-virus software will help you rid your computer of files such as viruses and Trojans, but not all anti-virus programs will detect other malicious files such as keyloggers or dialers. For this reason, it's wise to run anti-spyware software on top of your anti-virus program and keep it regularly updated. Some great free anti-spyware programs include:

Ad-Aware SE Personal
Windows Defender

What are cookies?

Cookies are commonly used to remember small bits of information, such as your colour preference, or Habbo log-in name so you don't have to re-enter it each time.

Habbo uses cookies to handle log-in information between the different web pages, so it is necessary for normal operation. If you don't have them enabled, you may be caught in a loop where you enter your password, but never actually see the pages after you log in.

See the section on enabling cookies for more info.

How do you delete cookies on a web browser?

Occasionally, browser bugs may prevent you from logging in. You can resolve this by deleting the cookies.

Firefox
1) Log out of Habbo Hotel Singapore (close the window). Close all Firefox windows/tab except for one.
2) Click the 'Tools' menu; select Options'.
3) A dialog box will appear. Select 'Privacy'.
4) Click the 'Show Cookies' item.
5) Select one or more cookies you want to remove and click 'Remove Cookie'. Clicking 'Remove All Cookies' will delete all cookies.
6) Close Firefox.
7) Restart Firefox and log back into Habbo Hotel.

Internet Explorer (IE7)
1) Log out of Habbo Hotel Singapore (close the window). Close all Internet Explorer windows except for one.
2) Click the 'Tools' menu; select 'Internet Options'.
3) A dialog box will appear. Select the 'Delete Files' button (may be under 'Browsing History')
4) In the 'Delete Browsing History' dialog box, click 'Delete Cookies'.
5) In the 'Delete Cookies' dialog box, click Yes.
6) Close Internet Explorer.
7) Restart Internet Explorer and log back into Habbo Hotel.

How do you enable cookies?

Now that the log-in function is directly from the Habbo website instead of the hotel pop-up, you need to make sure you have cookies enabled in order to log in. If you don't, you may be caught permanently in log-in purgatory, where you type in your password, and all you see, over and over again, is the log-in page.

To fix this, enable your cookies - don't worry, these are the low-fat ones.

For Firefox:
1) Go to Tools > Options.
2) Click on the Privacy tab. Under 'Cookies', check 'Accept cookies from sites'.
3) If you don't want to allow cookies for all sites, but only for Habbo (your 'Accept cookies from sites' would be unchecked), then click the 'Exceptions' button, and add the relevant sites. Our sites are:
- habbo.com.sg
- habbo.sg
- habbohotel.com.sg
- habbohotel.sg
- habbo.com.my
- habbohotel.com.my
- habbo.com.ph
- habbo.ph
- habbohotel.com.ph
- habbohotel.ph
Add all of these to the Allow list.
4) Click 'Close', and then 'OK' to save your changes. Shut down all Firefox windows.
5) Try checking in to Habbo again.

For Internet Explorer 7:
1) Click on Tools > Internet Options.
2) Click the Privacy tab. Most of the time, your privacy settings will be at Medium, if you haven't already changed them.
3) Click the 'Sites' button. Type in 'habbo.com.sg', and then click 'Allow'. Do the same with:
- habbo.sg
- habbohotel.com.sg
- habbohotel.sg
- habbo.com.my
- habbohotel.com.my
- habbo.com.ph
- habbo.ph
- habbohotel.com.ph
- habbohotel.ph
4) Click 'OK' until all the dialog boxes are closed, then close all IE7 windows.
5) Try checking in to Habbo again.
